More Than A Century Later
More Than A Century Later: 21st Century Student Perspectives on Alabama's 1901 Constitution is a three-part book project written by students at Booker T. Washington Magnet High School in Montgomery, Alabama.
Instructors Dr. DeShannon McDonald of the Law magnet, Mr. Ray Morton of the senior Government class, and Mr. Foster Dickson of the Creative Writing magnet led more than thirty students through Alabama's controversial state constitution, and the students wrote their responses to what they learned. Law and Government students received a variety of viewpoints from three guest speakers: Dr. Jim Day, a historian at Montevallo University; Freddie Patterson, Director of Governmental Affairs for ALFA; and Rebecca Jackson of Alabama ARISE. Creative Writing students focused on conducting interviews with registered voters and writing about those interviews. Two juniors in the Creative Writing magnet were also co-editors of the book. The 64-page paperback book was funded in part by a generous grant from state senator Quinton Ross provided to Ray Morton.
