The Writing Our Hope Annual Poetry Contest

Writing Our Hope is an online project committed to publishing writings by young people on the themes of tolerance and equality. The web project follows the August 2007 publication of Our Hope: Writings and Photographs on Tolerance and Equality by students at Booker T. Washington Magnet High School in Montgomery, Alabama.

And the 2008 winner is . . .

Second place: "Redemption" by Lynanne Rueda of Essex Junction, VT
Third place: "I Can't Tolerate It" by Monica Sheinin of Demarest, NJ

Two honorable mentions were also awarded to:

POETRY CONTEST RULES FOR 2009

ALL ENTRIES TO THE POETRY CONTEST MUST ACCOMPANIED BY A CREATIVE NONFICTION SUBMISSION TO THE 'ZINE.

Any high school (grades 9-12) student in North America may submit ONE poem that does not exceed 50 lines and adheres to the themes of hope, tolerance and/or equality. ONLY ONE ENTRY PER STUDENT. -- THE POETRY CONTEST IS NOT OPEN TO COLLEGE STUDENTS. --

Entries will be accepted from January 1 until March 30, 2009. No entries will be accepted before or after those dates.

ALL submissions and entries should include the following information with the nonfiction submission and poem entry:
author's name
author's e-mail address
author's current high school and the city and state where that school is
current teacher's name at that high school
that teacher's e-mail address

Nonfiction works and accompanying poem entries should be typed, proofread, and submitted by e-mail to
OURHOPE@WRITINGOURHOPE.ORG
with the creative nonfiction submission correctly formatted in the body of the e-mail and the poem below it, also in the body of the e-mail.

All submissions and entries will be reviewed and judged by the editors of Writing Our Hope , who are students in the Booker T. Washington Magnet High School creative writing magnet. Poems and nonfiction works will be judged separately.

All submitting writers who provide a valid e-mail address will receive a response about the contest results by May 30, 2009.

The first, second and third place poems will be published on the Writing Our Hope website. The first place poem will receive a cash prize.
